Cutting to the Beat

The purpose of this task is to see demonstrate the effectiveness of cutting to the beat of a soundtrack and how it can aid in the flow and continuity of  your footage.  By choosing a soundtrack of your choice, you will find there are natural (pre-made) peaks in tension that when correctly manipulated can raise the production value of oyur footage ten fold as well as increasing dramatic effect

  • Your task is download the following 4 Alpine videos using the Keepvid website.  As large a file as possible would be recommended, 720 I believe is possible.

  • Generally 1 - 1:30mins is more than enough.

The Foley Artist

The purpose of the Foley Artist is to get you thinking about important sounds and the timings of these sounds.  Layering of sound is important and often a role that is forgotten about.  Granted on a set, this particualr role would be the responsibility of the sound designer, however,  it is a useful task for an

editor  to take part in in order to finalise his/her production and grasp a good understanding of the nature and importance of sound in completing an effective final sequence.

To complete this task, You must:

  • Download 'The Foley Artist video' provided.

  • Watch it as a point of reference, take notes on the types of sound you may need to recreate

  • Upload the footage to Final Cut Pro or Premeiere Pro

  • Delete the sound

  • Delete/cut any sections that the Foley Artist (the man) is in so you are solely left with a video of the female character.

  • Delete the sound

  • Go out and re-record all sound in create way as possible before attempting to reassemble this sound with the left over footage.

Scary Poppins - Genre Manipulation and building Suspense

The Purpose of this task is simply to confuse/manipulate an audience into believing new meanings created from classic pre-filmed footage/features.

As an editor, you have sole control over how an audience percieves a particular genre or meaning.

Genre manipulation involves the carfeul timing of cuts, reaction shots and scenarios that may

transform the origins meaning into something completely new/different.  Within Scary Poppins,

viewers witness a pg rated family transformed into a horror using traditional reaction shots and

cutaways that are pieced together in such a way as to control an audiences perception of Narrative.

Remember Narrative structure will help you a lot in succeeding the task.

You Need to:

Watch and take notes of a specified/selected film - Look at reaction shots, scenarios, particular

moments in action, maybe there are reoccuring scenes or characters you can manipulate in

some way.

Whilst creating your notes, it is important to think about how you wish to build your narrative.

Simply dumping random images into a sequence is not enough, think about character

introduction, narrative structure.

What message are you trying to create and convey to a specified audience?

How much of the film do you actualy wish to share?

How might you doctor the footage to fit in with the particular Genre you are trying to assemble?
