Digital Stories

Digital storytelling is a short form of digital media production that allows everyday people to share aspects of their life story. The media used may include the digital equivalent of film techniques (full-motion video with sound), animation, stills, audio only, or any of the other forms of non-physical media (material that exists only as electronic files as opposed to actual paintings or photographs on paper, sounds stored on tape or disc, movies stored on film) which individuals can use to tell a story or present an idea.

Can a film make you feel like a bear? Co-created and produced by the National Film Board of Canada, is a 20-minute interactive documentary that allows participants to explore a female grizzly bear’s world. Launched at Sundance, the film was accompanied by an installation with an array of features such as augmented reality, webcams and a real bear trap in Park City.

Empowering women through the power of digital storytelling, this web site was produced by filmmakers Dyllan McGee, Betsy West, and Peter Kunhardt and developed by AOL. Makers.com gives viewers up-close-and-personal access to trailblazing women in a diversity of fields.

Is it a book? Is it a film? Is it a family photo album? No, it’s the National Film Board of Canada’s Welcome to Pine Point, a website that is all that and more, as it explores the memories of residents from the former mining community of Pine Point, Northwest Territories.

Who knew documents posted on a web sitecould give new life to an iconic and historic figure. It’s amazing to realize that there are nearly a million documents associated with the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. From speeches to telegrams to scribbled notes, this site makes these documents navigable and accessible, and best of all, provides incredible insight into the life and times of Dr. King.
