INSTALLATION

An opportunity to creative some cool stuff

     Deadlines: T1 - 16th Sept..... T2 - 30th Oct..... T3 - 22nd Nov..... T4  27 Nov TBC......

Scenario: You have been commissioned to plan, develop, implement and install one of a range of video projection pieces for an annual festival of arts: Art Fest. The exhibition space will determine the nature of the installation and the audience interaction with it. As part of your planning, execution and installation of the video art, you will also be required to learn and apply a range of research methodologies, and present your findings in an appropriate format to reflect, critically, on your own work.

Task 1: Unit 35

“Yes, but is it art?” Audio-Visual Commentary on Video Installations in Particular Spaces as an Art Form

 

Find examples of past and current practice in video installation (4 examples). Look at the use of technology and techniques, narrative and non-narrative forms, how the space is used to create meaning and what video art works mean.

 

Consider the audiences: who are the target audiences of different video art pieces, how do they respond?

 

Your task is to narrate a short commentary or written report with visuals to explain all of the above ideas to a Year 12 BTEC class. You may highlight individual video artists or you may cover a wide range of different video art styles and exhibitions. Clarity of your explanations, depth of your commentary and the level of interest in the information you have presented will ensure your audio-visual or report commentary is successful.

Task 1 – U1

Research: Notes and documentation for an existing finished media production – of 1 of your Unit 35 examples

 

You will research the requirements of a specific Video Installation and, working backwards, demonstrate an understanding of the requirements for the media production by reproducing YOUR interpretation of the documentation that would have been required for the production to be successfully achieved.

 

Your research should at least cover the areas below:

 

Based on your selected examples, write a detailed overview of each one that identifies the type of production it is and what features or conventions tell you this. Include screenshots of each example to support your writing.

 

Finance: Given the type of production, what costs would be involved? What are the possible sources of finance and what requirements (equipment, personnel, transport, materials, facility hire, clearances etc) are notable?

Provide a table of information for this. It might be difficult to find costings for your chosen example. Where appropriate, you can rely on more general costing information for similar productions. Good research will include your comments on the different types of costing items – do not just copy and paste information onto a table. Engage with the information yourself.

 

Time: What time frame would this production require? What deadlines would be required? What aspects would impact the schedule? Provide a timeline of all this information. Again, if you cannot find a timeline for your specific examples, source a range of industry models and comment on the time allocated for different stages of preproduction for different types of productions.

 

Location and Facilities: Account for all the facilities for both the shooting locations, equipment, post-production facilities, in-house or outsourcing, availability and costs of this. Provide tables, lists or whatever types of information you find for your examples, and a then complete a hypothetical location scout for your examples.

 

Codes of practice and regulation: What legal and regulatory documentation would be required for this production? Research and produce sample model releases, location permissions, health and safety documentation for cast and crew, copyright considerations and audience classification descriptions according to both local (HK) classification and international standards.

 

Provide sample documents for this. Comment critically on every sample document you include.

Task 2: Unit 35 & 1

Originate and develop an idea for a video installation for the Art Fest

 

Provide your thoughts and planning process in the form of preproduction for a video installation, designed specifically for a particular space.

 

Ideas

  • Sketches, Storyboards, Moodboard, scripts (for voice overs etc), set or location sketches, references to other installation pieces and influences, dubcharts for sound application, schedules.

  • These are technically a necessity dependent on your final piece

 

Technologies

  • Film, hand-held cameras, animation, still camera imagery, hand-crafted artwork; SOUND: synchronous, non-synchronous, diegetic, non-diegetic, extra-diegetic, studio recorded, dubbed, location recorded, SFX, composed soundtrack, room tone or silence; LIGHTING: screen, object or textured projection surface, single or multiple image sources

 

Venue

  • Location scouts for possible projection sites, document a recce, site risk assessment

 

Public Safety Video - dependent on your idea - I Don't mind if serious, sarcastic or amusing as long as you include/Show problems faced.

  • Venue management, installation risk assessments, copyright issues

  • Venue could be included as you are discussing piece, show atrocities that could happen and mention possible issues or even show them.

Task 3: Unit 35 & 1

Produce your Video Installation Piece

 

In accordance with your designs, you need to film, import, edit and manipulate your video art installation work into a form that is ready for public exhibition.

 

Production

  • Visual and sound material must be created. etc.

 

Post-Production

  • Image and sound manipulation and editing must be applied to the recorded image and audio files. In particular, a focus on sound should result in a complex soundtrack to the visual imagery.

Task 3: Unit 35

Installing your video art work (set-up for the event)

 

You need to competently and independently set-up your video installation piece for the event.

 

Installation Planning

  • Liaise with appropriate personnel regarding when and how installation should occur, health and safety issues, plan the logistics of equipment availability, delivery and set up.

 

Installation Process

  • Assemble equipment, set up the installation safely, complete safety checks to ensure the installation runs without issue.

 

DEADLINE: Exhibition Date is March 16th, 2020 (Unit 35 -  P4, M4, D4) due to cancellation regarding protests
