Unit 33: Stop Motion Animation Production

Criteria

 Task 1 

 Stop Motion Animation Past & Present 

In groups, explain in detail what Stop Motion Animation is and where it's origins lie.

 

  • You must choose at least one Pioneer of Animation and 1 contemporary Animator.  Compare and contrast their styles and discuss their histories.

  • You must include visual examples and present to class with your findings in a Prezzi/Creative format.

  • Attempt to introduce us to Animation Terminology

 

Pioneers: 

Joseph Plateau (phenakitoscope), William Horner (zoetrope), Emile Reynaud(praxinoscope), Edward Muybridge, Edison (kinetoscope), Lumière brothers, George Pal.

 

Contemporary work/Animators; 

The brothers Quay, Tim Burton, Aardman Animations;

 Task 2 

 Stop Motion Animation Ideas and Development 

In groups, you must generate thoroughly thought through ideas for your own original SMA Video with a chosen song of your choice.

 

  • You must create a detailed outline of your SMA discussing narrative/ideas and meaning.

  • You must demonstrate development of your ideas by completing various pre-production processes provided.

  • You must attempt to demonstrate imagination and flair within your ideas.

  • You must present your overall idea/pitch to the class via a video presentation that must include all of your development processes

 

Pre Production List: 

Ideas, all development papers, industry standard script, equipment and props list, production schedule, media department booking form for equipment, contact sheet and daily production report

 Task 3 

 Produce a Stop Motion Animation  

In groups/Individually, you must generate ALL footage for your Stop Motion Animation in a professional manner.

 

  • You must make sure your footage is off a high standard

  • You must demonstrate understanding of continuity within you film/footage

  • You must attempt to demonstrate imagination and flair within your ideas.

  • Produce SMA of high Technical Quality that demonstrates Professional Standards throughout.

  • You must Edit professional footage to produce a coherant SMA

 

Production: 

Make sure you have thoroughly planned your idea and you know EXACTLY what it is you are going to shoot.  The more planned you are the better the film.  Arrange booking and pick up of equipment.  Shoot SMA, obtaining all footage. Edit SMA to a professional standard taking into account appropriate continuity issues.
