UNIT 3: Research Techniques For The Creative Industries

ASSIGNMENT TITLE -  BBC Drama Commission

Unit 3 - The aim of the unit is develop understanding of and skills in research relevant to creative media production.  Learners will present their findings in both written and oral forms and will learn how to cite and reference their sources

 

Scenario:

BBC Three are looking to pilot a new drama to appeal to their target audience for 2016/17.

Per year, there are slots for 3 series and in 2016/17, 2 series remain to be commissioned.

 

The current commissioning slot available is a 6-8 x 60’ drama series at 21:00/22:00 within a

‘Dangerous Obsessions’, ‘Real Lives’, or ‘Changes’ strand and the tariff range should be targeted

between £375k-480k per hour.

 

You will need to undertake research into the audience and market for BBC Three, as well as for the production itself.

 

You will use this research to inform your proposal and treatment for the commission. You will present this in a formal pitch

to a representative of BBC Three’s controller for Drama, Doug Liman.

Guide to Research Techniques for the Creative Media Industries:  You will write a web article on research techniques for the creative media industries for a guide to working in the creative media sector to go on your websites.

 

The guide is aimed at BTEC Media Students starting the course next year.

 

You will:

1. Collate notes on Types of Research, Methods of Research & Purposes of Research together with notes on a range of relevant examples.

2. Draft and then submit your article to your websites for all public access.

  Task 2  

Research Portfolio:  You have been commissioned to research, propose and write a drama script for either BBC Three according to a brief.

 

You will:

1. Draw up a research strategy outlining the focus questions that will guide your research, the methods and techniques you will use, and deadlines for completing each research activity.

2. Carry out a range of research activities relevant to your production covering the audience, the market and the production itself. You must ensure that you carry out both primary and secondary research and gather both quantitative and qualitative data.

3. Complete a research log detailing the date, sources of information, a description of information obtained and your personal notes on how reliable the source is and how the information can be used by you.

4. Compile the evidence of your research together with your research strategy and research log into a fully indexed Research Portfolio.

  Task 3  

The Proposal & Treatment: You will produce a written proposal & treatment for your BBC Three drama idea incorporating the results of your research.

 

You will:

1. Define the audience & market for the product (genre, target audience, competitors and other appropriate information).

2. Define the production requirements for the product (content, costs, crew, talent, supplier, facilities, locations, equipment, logistics, viability, placement, schedule, etc.)

  Task 4  

The Pitch: You have been invited to pitch your ideas to a representative from BBC Three. You will present your ideas orally with the aid of the following:

 

1. A visual presentation that incorporates the results of your research and any visual material that will help communicate your ideas.

2. Speaker’s notes that provide you with reminders and prompts of the aspects you will cover.

3. Handouts of material that need closer examination than on-screen, e.g. graphs, charts, etc.
