Assignment title

The Invisible Art of Slicing

Purpose of this assignment is to develop learners’ skills in, and understanding of, moving image post production processes.  Learners will do this through exploring the professional practice of editing, and developing their own technical and creative skills.  Learners will also develop an understanding of how their work can affect the final outcome of a production.

Idlewild-Juno is a competitive post production company in search for new and exciting talent within the Creative Film sector. They have tasked you with the opportunity to develop and create a 2-3 minute Film Trailer that showcases a mix of experimental editing techniques with traditional methods of editing in order to create an effective and engaging individual production.

  Task 1

You will be given lessons in class which will focus on the work of several editors and editing techniques that have evolved through cinematic history. You will also be given an individual research task to explore; an editor/editing style of your choice that showcases the development and principles of editing.

You will also receive practical sessions about jump cutting, parallel editing, 180% rule, continuity, montage manipulation of meaning, as well as sessions on the appropriate use of the equipment.

Then, you will prepare and deliver a presentation about the development and principles of editing, developing an insight into the ‘language’ of editing and the technical conventions used by editors to communicate with audiences.  You should aim to use several comprehensively explained examples and to use appropriate subject terminology throughout your presentation.

You might want to divide your presentation into two main areas; the development of several technical editing techniques and a case on an editor of your choice annotating a short scene from a moving image they have produced. Aim for around 15 slides, alternatively a video presentation is acceptable.

  Task 2

You should prepare your ideas for your 2-3 minute video Trailer, deciding on a technical style and how you will portray a particular purposeful meaning through use of editing. Remember, you have been asked to create an effective and engaging production that reflects a near professional set of standards specifically focused on editing.

You should aim to work independently to show imagination in your design and to aspire to professional production standards.

Your pre-production log should include as a minimum:

·         Initial ideas – mind-maps or notes

·         Development – further sketches, technical ideas, producing a rushes log, produce an edit decision list, Research on Trailer design

·         Industry standard script (2-3 ages)

·         Notes on audio; temp tracks

·         Audience notes; audience profile, evidence of initial audience research (focus group.)

·         Final plans – storyboards, soundtrack, technical notes, character designs.

·         Consistent use of subject terminology.

·         Production and Import of clips – formats and resolution intended to use

  Task 3

You should produce your edited final Trailer.  You should be working independently and aiming for professional standards of work.

Your final piece should be engaging to a specified audience. As such, it should probably exploit various camera angles, a creative use of editing techniques that demonstrates a particular meaning and understanding. Your editing style should be controlled yet creative. Use of appropriate transitions and conventions will need to be explored as well as creation of sound overlapping, synchronisation and using sound to create impact.

  Task 4

You should show your Trailer to an audience, gather their responses using questionnaires and/or interviews.  You must show evidence of audience responses and then produce a short written evaluation, reviewing your own Trailer and how you feel it meets the required criteria set.
