Assignment Title
Tell it Like It Is
As part of an annual film award screening, the category for ‘documentary production’ has recently opened up. As an independent, Hong Kong-based filmmaker, you want to showcase not only your talents but communicate an aspect of Hong Kong to a wider audience through this film award opportunity.
You will research the specific conventions of documentary film making using a variety of written and filmic sources and extracting information in note and summary form before drafting, reviewing and presenting a report on the documentary genre.

You will then identify and then research a subject area that is of interest to you and pitch a documentary proposal for approval.
If you wish, designs and final production will lead directly to submission of your final piece to the film awards.
Task 1:
Research: What can go wrong? The issues surrounding factual programming.
Find written sources (books, websites, articles) about particular issues that face factual programming. You must read and extract key information, and develop notes to show your understanding. These notes will contribute to your final report on factual programming. To support your notes and research for the report, you should also watch 2 (minimum) feature length documentaries, factual news broadcasts and reality television production. Take further notes and screenshots from the examples to identify issues regarding the accuracy, bias and modes of presentation in them.

For this task, you will have chosen a topic and gathered a range of written materials that relate to the topic. Consider history, statistics, experts, views from the community, articles, interviews etc that relate to your chosen topic.
